We are very pleased to invite you to the Interdisciplinary World Congress of Urban Studies II, which will be held at Istanbul Topkapı University Kazlıçeşme Campus and online between 30 November, 01 and 02 December 2023. While the hybrid format of the congress allows participants from all over the world to participate in the congress, we would like to express our wish to meet in person with as many participants as possible in Istanbul. Congress languagesare Turkish and English. Abstracts in both languages will be accepted. Natural disasters not only threaten human life, but also cause serious damage by affecting the living spaces of people in urban areas. Therefore, disaster management and safety issues are extremely important for sustainable urbanization. In order to tackle the consequences of disasters and minimize the damage, it is necessary to increase the resilience capacity of cities and to respond quickly and effectively in emergencies. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals emphasize the importance of sustainable urbanization and aim to minimize the damage of disasters. These goals include the climate crisis, the protection of water resources, food security, human rights and gender equality. Building disaster-resilient cities is an important step towards achieving these goals.[1] In this way, cities can achieve a more sustainable structure, increase the quality of life of people and alleviate the aftermath. However, the participation of local administrations, non-governmental organizations and the public is also necessary in order to make urban areas resilient to disasters. In this way, preparation for disasters can be achieved, the effects of disasters can be minimized and a healthier living space can be provided. The purpose of this congress is to emphasize the importance of disaster management and safety issues for sustainable urbanization, as natural disasters cause serious damages that threaten human life and affect living spaces in urban areas. Within the scope of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, it is aimed to minimize the damages of disasters with an emphasis on the importance of sustainable urbanization. In line with this purpose, the construction of resilient cities is seen as an important step, and thus, the quality of life of people can be increased by achieving a more sustainable structure. Broad participation is required to increase the level of preparedness for disasters. In this context, the effects of disasters can be minimized and a healthier living space can be provided with the participation of local governments, non-governmental organizations and the public. We welcome valuable contributions to the congress from all disciplines, NGOs, policy makers/practitioners and academics.
